Women’s Viagra may be available by 2016

LONDON - A “women’s Viagra” that is hoped to boost flagging libido may soon be available.

The new pill, called Lybrido, uses a combination of testosterone and a Viagra-like drug in a bid to increase sexual desire and improve sexual satisfaction.

The drug is hoped to be on sale within three years, the Daily Telegraph reported.
Viagra has proved to be an extremely profitable drug, with worldwide sales at nearly £1.5 billion (S$2.9 billion) a year.

Scientists have so far struggled to create a female version of the drug, however, because while Viagra has a physiological action on men, increasing female arousal depends as much upon psychological as physical factors.

Dutch firm Emotional Brain claims to have developed a pill that resolves this dilemma by combining a Viagra-like drug with testosterone.

The physical effect of Viagra magnifies the effect of testosterone on the brain’s pleasure centres, and the pill should be taken three and a half hours before sex to have an effect.

The results of a trial involving more than 200 women have not yet been published, although Emotional Brain founder Adriaan Tuiten describes them as “very, very promising”.

A larger trial is planned and it is hoped that the drug will be on the market in Europe and the United States at the end of 2016.

Dr Tuiten claims that the pills enable women to make love more often and improved their chances of reaching orgasm.

He believes that they will be most popular with long-married women who tend to experience a drastic decline in sexual desire over time.

Dr Andrew Goldstein, a US expert in female sexual health, told the New York Times that drug companies such as Emotional Brain will be under pressure to prove they are not turning women into nymphomaniacs.
There are also fears that Lybrido could put women under pressure to perform, while sceptics of the drug point to the myriad of cultural factors that have a bearing on libido.

Dr Tuiten says that up to 43 per cent of women suffer from a low sex drive at some point in their lives and that, far from turning women into sex maniacs, the drug will simply raise a low libido to normal levels.

Dr Mike Wyllie, one of the team of scientists that discovered and developed the male impotence drug Viagra, described Lybrido as “an interesting concept”. AGENCIES

Heart Failure Accelerates Male Menopause

Heart failure accelerates the aging process and brings on early andropausal syndrome (AS), according to research presented today at the Heart Failure Congress 2013. AS, also referred to as male ‘menopause’, was four times more common in men with heart failure.

The Heart Failure Congress is the main annual meeting of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology and is being held 25-28 May in Lisbon, Portugal.

Male Menopause

As men get older they are more likely to suffer from andropausal syndrome (AS), also called ‘menopause’, androgen deficiency in the aging male (ADAM), or late-onset hypogonadism. Men with AS have decreased levels of anabolic hormones, including testosterone, and it has been suggested that these hormone deficiencies are what cause the clinical symptoms.

The symptoms of AS according to the Aging Male Symptom Rating Scale can be divided into three categories: sexual (erectile dysfunction, problems with libido, decrease in beard growth, feelings of ‘having passed the zenith of life’), psychological (feeling discouraged, depressed, irritable, anxious, nervous), and somato-vegetative (joint and muscle complaints, sweating, need for more sleep, sleep disturbances, weakness, exhaustion).

Heart failure increases with age. Deficiencies of anabolic hormones are common in men with systolic heart failure, leading to reduced exercise capacity, depression and poor prognosis. But until now the impact of heart failure on the prevalence of AS and the severity of andropausal symptoms has not been studied.

Professor Ewa A. Jankowska (Wroclaw, Poland) said: “AS leads to poor quality of life. We wanted to discover whether heart failure increases AS and whether additional androgen therapies could improve quality of life in heart failure patients.”

For the study, the researchers compared the prevalence of AS and the severity of andropausal symptoms between 232 men with systolic heart failure aged 40-80 years and 362 age-matched healthy peers. The magnitude of andropausal symptoms (psychological, sexual and somato-vegetative) was assessed using the Aging Males’ Symptoms (AMS) Rating Scale and AS was diagnosed if the total AMS score was 50 points or more.

They found that AS affected almost one-third of men with heart failure, regardless of their age group. In men aged 40-59 years, heart failure led to a four-fold increase in the prevalence of AS (28% vs. 7%, p<0.001) and an increase in the severity of sexual and somato-vegetative andropausal symptoms (p<0.001). Men aged 60-80 years with and without heart failure had a similar prevalence of AS and severity of andropausal symptoms. Among men with systolic heart failure, the prevalence of AS was similar in both age groups (40-59 and 60-80 years).

The authors concluded that heart failure accelerates the natural process of aging and favors early onset of AS. Professor Jankowska said: “Heart failure leads to anabolic hormone deficiencies at a relatively young age and thereby accelerates male aging and the development of AS. These patients have poor quality of life and need endocrinological and sexual counseling.

It has been suggested that the anabolic hormone deficiencies in heart failure could be caused by heart failure treatments, which could affect the metabolism of hormones, or comorbidities, which might impair endocrine gland function. But in a second abstract (61271) the research group found few and weak associations between the presence of anabolic deficiencies, comorbidities and therapies in men with systolic heart failure. Professor Jankowska said: “This shows that it is the heart failure itself which impacts on the functioning of the endocrine glands.”
She concluded: “Further research is needed to determine whether androgen supplementation can reduce the severity of andropausal symptoms.

I saw the reviews of this product on Dr. Oz. I decided to try it. I have been taking it for 2 weeks, and I don't notice anything, other than I get hunger pains more than usual. Maybe they work different on different people; I'm not sold on it. I was hoping they would at least curb my appetite, it was the opposite.

Difference Between Cosmetic And Reconstructive Surgery

Cosmetic Surgery 
Cosmetic surgery refers to surgical procedures that
are elective, meaning that they are not a medical necessity.  People generally choose to have cosmetic surgery to alter their physical appearance.  Reasons for this may include a personal dislike in how they look or a lack of self-esteem, among many other reasons. It is, however, always a conscious decision.

Some of the common cosmetic procedures that people get include:

  • Facelift – to remove wrinkles and other signs of aging
  • Tummy tuck – removal of excess flesh from the abdomen
  • Breast augmentation – an alteration of the size and shape of a woman’s breast
  • Liposuction – removal of excess fat from under the skin by suction
  • Rhinoplasty – plastic surgery on the nose
  • Vaginoplasty – reconstruction of a vaginal canal and mucous membrane
  • Botox injections – an injection into the muscles on the face to relax muscles and reduce wrinkles.
These types of cosmetic procedures will alter your appearance, but are not a result of any medical issue that has developed since birth, or any condition that has surfaced from birth.  In the vast majority of cases, it is considered a way to improve what is already there. 

Reconstructive Surgery
Reconstructive surgery is also designed to change a person’s appearance, but for different reasons.  In most cases, reconstructive surgery is performed due to medical necessity, not just for personal preference.  The main focus of such surgery is to improve the function of the body parts, but not the appearance.
Some of the reasons that reconstructive surgery may be required include:
  • Birth defects
  • Disfigurement due to an accident
  • Skin cancer
  • Mastectomy
If a patient is in a situation where they cannot lead a normal life without the procedure, the surgery they receive is considered reconstructive surgery.  For example, if you are having your nose worked on because you believe it is too big, that is considered cosmetic surgery.  If you are having it worked on because you have a deviated septum and cannot breathe properly, that is considered reconstructive surgery.
Another difference between these two types of surgery is how they are paid for.  Since a cosmetic surgery is not a necessity, you will probably have to pay for it out of your pocket.  Many surgeons offer payment plans to make the surgery payments easier, but in the end, you will still have to pay a lump sum of money.
With reconstructive surgery, your insurance will usually pitch in or pick up the tab entirely, because you have no other option.  If it is a medical necessity, you can expect it to be covered.

Angelina Jolie's mastectomy

Today, Angelina Jolie published a piece in the New York Times about her decision to undergo a preventive double mastectomy last month. As a carrier of a gene mutation called BRCA1, Jolie cut her chances of contracting breast cancer from 87 percent to under 5 percent by undergoing the procedure. I felt so honored to read Jolie’s detailed first-person account of her experience, as well as her advocacy for all the women around the world to gain access to the too-expensive tests and procedures that have empowered her to fight for her own life. Those warm feelings were soon deflated by some of the unexpectedly nasty commentary that pooled around her story.

Commenter’s snarked that Jolie had received a “boob job.” Some suggested that her medical emergency was just a tabloid ruse to cover up elective breast implants. Others morbidly asked after the whereabouts of the breast tissue removed from her body. “RIP Angelina’s boobs” was a typical ignorant comment. Said one commenter on a Jezebel post about the op-ed, “How many guys stopped reading as soon as they realized Angelina Jolie has no breasts—she's dead to me!"

I’d like to dismiss these commenters as trolls, but their attitudes are unfortunately pervasive in our culture, and they don’t just represent a personal affront to Angelina Jolie, a veteran of such inappropriate body commentary. These comments affect every woman who has undergone a similar procedure—every woman who has overcome the pain, the fear, and the constant and casual reminders that her breasts are more valuable than her life. Really, these comments affect all women who have seen their bodies reduced to mere objects for others to consume. As scholar of the stars Anne Helen Petersen says, “Remember: What we talk about when we talk about celebrities is, as ever, ourselves.” Some of us are not speaking very highly of the women in our lives today.

Jolie, for her part, addressed aesthetic concerns straightforwardly in her op-ed. (She also made a worrisome reference to "wonderful holistic doctors working on alternatives to surgery," which I can only hope won't steer readers away from the valid medical treatment they may need). “There have been many advances in this procedure in the last few years, and the results can be beautiful,” Jolie wrote. “On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.” It’s powerful to hear Jolie own this choice as beautiful. But I’d go further to say that, regardless of the aesthetic aftermath of breast cancer surgeries—and the individual choices every woman makes in how to deal with them—the results of these procedures are necessarily and breathtakingly beautiful. Not only does this procedure not diminish a woman’s femininity in any way—it highlights her humanity. As Jolie put it, “Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has.”

And yet, perversely, some fans feel as if a part of Jolie has been stolen from them. One well-meaning but misguided commenter told me on Twitter yesterday: “Happy to hear she's giving herself much better odds. As a guy, I will miss her lovely curves though.” (The reconstructive surgery she described presumably restored her curves.) I can tell you from experience that when a person you love makes it through that surgery, they have never looked more lovely. I don’t mean that in a strictly emotional sense—it registers physically, too. The way that they look at you when they wake up. The breaths they take. Their smile. The way they move through space. You don’t miss anything: You are reminded of all of the wonderful things that you are not missing. It's gorgeous.

"I just wanted to be, 'Hey, let's have a baby,' and we would just have one. Kourtney did. And I wish that was the way for me," Khloe revealed in the interview with Cosmopolitan, adding, "But it won't be. I'll have to take hormones. I do want to have a baby, but I don't feel the urgency to have one this very moment."
